My husband and I lost our son, Kyson Sterling, on September 9, 2022, due to a placental abruption that nearly cost me my own life. Shortly after this tragedy, I remember MAPS presenting at our church, offering grief counseling services. I reached out to them, and within a few days, they scheduled an appointment for both me and my husband. Their counselor, Sandy, provided Biblically-based therapy that was instrumental in our journey through the grief of losing our son. I can't imagine where we'd be without Sandy's support, pouring hope and love from our Savior into our lives during such a dark time.
Fast forward nine months, and we discovered we were expecting again! It was an incredibly exciting time for us, as our prayers were answered, but Satan frequently reminded us of his mission to steal, kill, and destroy. I remembered that MAPS offered free compassion scans to help ease the anxiety of those who have faced the darkness of loss. When I went, I was greeted with grace and hope. The nurse let me see my baby through an ultrasound and recorded his heartbeat. They placed the recording into a stuffed owl that now sits in our healthy newborn’s nursery.
MAPS was there for us during our storm and continued to support us when we finally received our rainbow. MAPS is doing Kingdom work in a world where hope often seems very dim. They will always hold a special place in our family's heart for reminding us that only He can turn ashes into beauty.
Babies don’t replace babies, and we will always grieve for our son, Kyson. But we are so thankful for his big brother, Easton, and our rainbow baby, Evan Sterling, born on January 23, 2024. Glory to God!
Aleah heard about MAPS from a friend after she had visited Planned Parenthood. To Aleah’s parents, Daryl and Charla, this recommendation was a divine intervention that saved their grandchild from a potential abortion. Getting to MAPS was critical to Aleah’s decision to continue the pregnancy.
Although they live in another state, Daryl and Charla accompanied Aleah to her first appointment during which an ultrasound confirmed a viable pregnancy and a developing baby in Aleah’s womb. “From the moment we stepped into the building, we felt welcomed and genuinely cared for. There was a sense of peace. The staff really cared for our daughter. She was not there to be diagnosed, but to be listened to.”
When asked where their daughter would be without MAPS, they hesitate to consider the alternative. Instead, they choose to focus on the hopeful future ahead as MAPS continues to provide their daughter with parenting classes and ongoing support. “MAPS was an answer to prayer. This was totally a God- thing,” said Daryl.
We received a call from Jonathon, a sidewalk counselor outside Planned Parenthood asking if we could provide Maria with an ultrasound. Maria and Alberto had traveled over 100 miles seeking an abortion in Asheville. Outside the clinic, Jonathon convinced the young couple not to proceed with the abortion. He told them about MAPS and the services we provide. A short time later, Alberto and Maria showed up at our door.
While one of our nurses performed a pregnancy test and listened to Maria’s story, another staff member had the opportunity to share the gospel with Alberto in the lobby. During the ultrasound, Maria and Alberto got to see their baby on the screen. Confronted with the reality of life and understanding the consequences of abortion, they chose to carry and parent. A few short hours earlier, this baby was scheduled for termination. By God’s grace, their child’s life was saved. Before they left MAPS, we connected them with the pregnancy resource center in their hometown. That center has provided wrap-around support and care throughout the pregnancy.
